Today 12th July 2020 would have been the men’ finals at Wimbledon if the 2020 championships was not cancelled, so please bear with me because this may bring nostalgic feelings for the Tennis lovers in the house😊.
I fell in love with tennis the moment my dad introduced me and my siblings to it. Growing up it was not a common sport to play like football, but the fact I could excel at something as an individual gave me the drive to be good at it, the best part about playing tennis was it was actually fun and a good way to stay fit. Tennis has grown with its popularity and many fans are known to camp out and queue just to get tickets to watch their favourite players.
As much as I love watching the 4 Grand Slams which consists of Australian Open (Mid-January), French Open (Late May/Early June), Wimbledon (Late June/July) and US Open (August/September) my favourite not surprising is Wimbledon, the atmosphere is everything and you have to go there to understand where this feeling comes from.
I can still remember applying in the 125th Championship Wimbledon 2011 ballot for the 1st time ever and getting the opportunity to purchase a pair of tickets for No. 2 Court, I was over the moon and of course my dad was my plus one, all I can say is my first time stepping on the All England Lawn Tennis grounds is definitely a memory that will always stay with me.
I have so many memorable memories about watching some epic games on centre court, like Sir Andy Murray winning the quarter final against Fernando Verdasco after coming from 2 games down to win the last 3 games which was an absolutely brilliant match, bless my friend @ Yeside I am sure she was worried I will go into labour since I was heavily pregnant with my son, but that did not stop me joining in the shouts willing Andy not to give up all, need to say that determination from Sir Andy Murray to come through that must have motivated him and eventually lead him to win his 1st Wimbledon championship against Novak Djokovic (who is equally talented) on 7th July 2013, as a super fan I never doubted he could do it and I was glued to my TV on the day he made history and ended the 77 year wait for a Great Britain Wimbledon Men’s singles champion.
7th July 2016 was a blast and another day to make memories, because I went back again to Wimbledon with my dad and this time on centre court I finally got to see the Williams sisters play for a place in the finals. Watching both Venus and Serena playing their respective semi-finals was timeless. To see them live and so close that I could almost touch them was the icing on the cake. Serena was absolutely powerful as always and won her semi-finals match against Elena Venina which enabled her play in the finals on 9th July 2016 against Angelique Kerber to win her 7th Wimbledon and 22nd Grand Slam title.
Thank you for walking with me down memory lane to remember some of my favourite memories of Wimbledon and watching some of the greatest players of all time. Thank you to my fellow Tennis lovers my dad, @Ifenayi, @Yeside, @Ome @Eziefa and all our partners and family for bearing with us 😊. I cannot wait for Tennis to resume hopefully sooner than later, @Ome we need to meet up and play a round of Tennis like we keep saying we will do and @ Tope B when you asked me recently if I was missing Wimbledon, please permit me to change my answer, YES I DO.
Ahhh….nostalgic memories of when things were ‘normal’! Tennis will be back soon Oma….we all can’t wait! 🙂 Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
You are welcome Eziefa, thankful for the memories 🙂
